Limerick Pogrom Essay

The Limerick Pogrom (1904-1906)

Outline Plan

Define and Justify

The topic I have chosen is entitled ‘The Limerick Pogrom’ a small anti-Semitic boycott that took place in Limerick in the early 1900’s. Anti-Semitism is something that has occurred at some point all across the globe. Ireland has generally remained free from this over the years. However, many people do not realise that at one time there was a pogrom’, which took place in the small county of Limerick.

By the end of my research I hope to have achieved the following:

  • To find out the cause and events of the Limerick Pogrom.
  • To find out the consequences of the pogrom.
  • To learn more about the man who led the pogrom-Father John Creagh.

Intended Approach

I intend to carry out my research by looking on the Internet, going to various bookstores and visiting the Irish Jewish Museum to find the sources and information needed. I will store any notes I make on my computer and will make several drafts before the final report. I will also make sure to keep a strict word count on my report.

Evaluation of Sources

  1. Jews in Twentieth-Century Ireland-This is a secondary source. Its strengths were that it dedicated a full chapter to the Limerick Pogrom and gave a full account of it from start to finish in chronological order. The footnotes of all the material were also very helpful. The information was presented with clear objectivity.       Its only weakness was that it didn’t give much information on Father Creagh’s background.
  1. The Old Limerick Journal-This is a secondary source. The strengths of this Internet source was that it gave more information about Father Creagh and his background than any of my other sources. Its provenance is also assuring as it comes from the Limerick City Council Website. Its weakness was that it featured some bias.
  1. Grandpa-Speak to me in Russian-This was a secondary source but contained original footage and primary material. It has many strengths being a television documentary. It allowed me to gain insight to my topic with visual and audio references. It also provided me with information on one particular family–The Lentins who were in Limerick at the time of the Pogrom. Its weakness was that it dealt with a lot more than the pogroms and was quite selective in what it showed.
