Northern Campaigns

  • Thrace-Triballians and Illyrians
  • Natives occupied high ground with carts
  • Alexander gets men to side step them and put shields up (LAT)
  • Easy win-1500 killed
  • Triballian king sends woman and children across Danube and so Alexander retraces his steps. Alexander catches them napping and attacks. Triballians hold on in long range combat but are defeated.
  • Getae-Alexander going to cross Danube but decides to use land rather then ships but meets resistance.
  • Going to cross river to attack the 14,000.
  • Changes his plan and attacks at night.
  • Getae overcome by the phalynx and the swift movements of Alexander and flee the town which Alexander takes.
  • Alexander visited by King of Triballians and other Native groups such as the Celts who want to make friendship with Alexander which he does.
  • Cleitus in revolt-Makes his way to Pelium which Cleitus occupied.
  • Town was rigged and defended and so Alexander locks them up.
  • Glaucias arrives with army of Taulantians and Alexander abandons plans.
  • Alexander gets men to search and forage around.
  • Glaucias seizes high ground but Alexander shows off with Phalynx and Glaucias abandons high ground. Alexander deals with opposition.
  • Alexander moves in night to attack Cleitus and Glaucias who are camped without protection. Kills many. Cleitus goes back to town, sets fire and seeks refuge with Glaucias.

Thebes-335 BC

  • Part of Northern Campaign.
  • People in Thebes try to take over the Macedonian Garrison in Cadmeia.
  • Demosthenes tries to overthrow government by inviting people in exile back, by inciting revolt and by supplying the people with arms.
  • He insisted that Alexander had died in Illyria.
  • Alexander worried that this might spread to other states in the Peloponnese.
  • Alexander marches to within 6 miles by halts to give them a chance to repent. (PERSON)
  • Thebans refuse and attack Macedonians with missiles.
  • Alexander moves outside the gates but still waits.
  • Perdiccas begins assault on his own accord and breaches the palicide at Cadmeia.
  • Alexander orders advance with archers and Agrianes to avoid him being cut off.
  • Perdiccas wounded and boxed in Thebans but they revolt and attack with Macedonians retreating.
  • Alexander counters and Thebans fail to shut gate in time.
  • Slaughter-Burst into houses and spare neither men nor woman. 6000 killed and 30,000 taken prisoner.
  • Reasons-Put down to wrath of G-d for Theben treachery of Athens in Persian War and saying Athenians should be sold into slavery.
  • Signs from heaven that had been prophesising it.
  • Various branches of Aetolians beg for forgiveness.
  • Athens sent men to say they approved of punishment.
  • Alexander demanded men in charge of revolt and Demosthenes.

  4. Blamed Cleitus murder and Mutiny and Hyphasis on G-d’s anger at this.
  5. Goes to Delphi to visit Oracle of Apollo ‘you are invincible my son’
  6. Greek campaign over.
